Work Session on 27 February 2020

The first several photographs show the cannibalized #1 engine, including plywood patches that I made and installed to cover areas from which we stole parts. With the engine closed up, we needed to reinstall the doors. They weigh about 100 pounds each and it was a little tricky to get them lined up on their hinge pins but now she's pretty. Well, as pretty as a 56-year-old locomotive can look!

Today's second project was helping Howard Wise with reassembly of the #2 Maybach. An oil supply tube threads up into each piston and needs to be aligned before full reassembly. In these photographs Howard is working on the #10 piston. After aligning and securing the oil tube the piston comes back out; rings and the piston cap will need to be attached to the piston body before full reassembly.

Hostling Session on 1 June 2020

This morning I went for a ride on four, then eight, then 12 wheels, the latter two whilst called into a meeting for work.

Four wheels was Mr. Toad, my 263-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder 2013 Mazdaspeed 3 and my trusty steed which safely (and quickly!) got me to Brightside and back home.

Eight wheels was SP 1195, a 900-horsepower V-8 EMD SW900 built in 1954, which we used to switch equipment around the shop area at Brightside this morning. ("We" meaning Howard Wise did the work and I enjoyed the ride.)

12 wheels was SP 9010, a 4000-horsepower (from two twin-turbo Maybach V-16 Diesels) Krauss-Maffei ML4000 built in Munich in 1964. It was zero horsepower today because her #2 engine is in the process of being rebuilt and her #1 engine is damaged and is unlikely to ever run again but I boarded her for a ride as SP 1195 hostled her into a new spot in the car barn. Although I've been honored to spend some intimate time with her innards this is the first time I've been aboard as SP 9010 turned a wheel.

Me being a photographer, Howard being a serious railroader.

Gerry was our switchman.
