I've been fascinated by trains and railroading for as long as I can remember. My first model train (nominally Dad's, but it was clearly mine) was an HO scale Lionel set for Christmas when I was about 3 years old. For most of my childhood, we lived close to the Chicago and Northwestern (C&NW) and their commuter trains.
My mother grew up in Oklahoma and also had family in Kansas City, which resulted in my first long-distance train ride (so far as I know) being on the Santa Fe (AT&SF) in early 1966. The Santa Fe continued to figure prominently, both when we lived in Oklahoma briefly in late 1967 and again in 1969-1970, then later as a way to travel from Chicago to Oklahoma to visit friends and relatives.
Later, I became fascinated with California and its "home town" railroad, the Southern Pacific (SP), a railroad which covered a huge variety of geographic challenges and consequently had some fascinating equipment.
