This was my first track day with much-stickier Nitto NT05 tires than the all-season tires that came on the car. Compared to the March track day it was hot (100°F) and dry, and we bypassed The Cyclone (turn 5). This bypass, shown in blue in the map at right, features a blind summit leading into a right turn, a tricky bit of track which took a while to figure out.

Shift points were unchanged from March as they seemed to work well. The diagram above uses data from a PLX KIWI 3 OBD adapter to show which gears were used in various parts of the track, though the Track Addict app, which guesses gear based on speed and engine RPM, guessed wrong and was off by one. Actual gear usage was as follows:

Our first session after lunch turned interesting when I waved a ratty Volvo 740(?) past me late in the third full lap. Now following this car (and a Porsche), from what I hoped was a safe distance, I saw a cloud of smoke erupt behind the Volvo. Expecting the worst, I backed off, and my caution was quickly justified when I spotted discoloring of the pavement and noticed waning traction—the Volvo had dumped its oil on the track. He parked at a turnoff past turn 9; the Porsche and I were greeted by a red flag at turn 11 and parked just beyond at turn 12 for at least 12 minutes before being instructed to continue to the pits.

The last session of the day produced my best times but unfortunately I had bumped Track Addict into the wrong mode (something that's far too easy to do) and it didn't match the data to the track.
