As for the Aloha failure, corrosion is a huge problem in the Hawaiian Isalnds. In 1987, an overhaul co. I was running got an HAL DC-8 in for a D-check. We found enough corrosion in the fuselage to guess that if had landed hard at VNY, it would have broken in two! You could break major stuctural parts by hand! I suspect this had a good deal to do with the Aloha incident. For whatever it's worth.
