Aircraft cabins are pressurized to the equivalent of 8000 feet. Many ground-based activities take place beyond this altitude, and people tolerate them well if in good health (Examples- much of the Boy Scout camp at Philmont in New Mexico, where thousands of healthy teenagers hike with their middle-aged dads; many Rocky Mountain ski slopes; the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, where I have walked unprotected at 13,200 feet- but felt less than lively!) Mountain climbers routinely function higher, although as another poster pointed out, the risks to brain function are nasty as you near 20,000 feet. The brain function of anyone who plans to climb this high may be in question BEFORE the trip.
