I was reading in regard to the Eastern 401 accident, that the autopilot
had a setting called "Control Wheel Steering."

My understanding of this feature was, unlike the 'Command" position, is
that the autopilot would control certain aspects of flight, while other
aspects of flight were controlled by steering column inputs. So for
example, the AP could be set to hold an altitude, and heading could be
steered by use of the yoke.

If I have this right, what could be the possible benefit to this set up?
Why not set all of the control inputs using the controls on the AP
panel?
