When Boeing launched the 757 and later ceased the production of the 727, Boeing left a big hole in its family of aircraft. The 737-400 barely satisfies the capacity requirement but has far shorter range than the 727. Airbus nicely filled the market with the A320. Perhaps, Boeing has itself to blame for leaving a lucrative market sector for Airbus to attack. Boeing allowed Airbus to become a viable competitor. It's quite obvious that the 737NG is meant to fill this hole. Hence, it's not a big surprise that the -800 is the best-selling model in the 737NG family.
