When calculating best altitude, I use a formula of 10,000 feet per 100
NM up to the service ceiling of the aircraft involved. I do make
adjustments for weight, temperature, and winds as necessary to yield
best groundspeed.

Unless I encounter very strong headwinds or temperatures much higher
than standard, the above formula works for me.
