There is another practical problem associated with superfan, ultra-high
bypass ratio engines.  I remember that at one time a bypass ratio of 17
was floating around, and I have seen calculations singing praises of
bypass ratios of up to 36.  The problem is that of fan size.  Anyone who
has seen what the replacement of the powerplant on a 737 has done can
relate to that.  The undercarriage for most aircraft would be too long
and skinny for comfort.  Or the weight penalty would be too high. I
believe this is one of the main reasons why an ultra high bypass ratio
engine is not practical.
