TWA's jet fleet

I've noticed that on just about all of TWA's DC-9s/MD-80s, 727s and now
even their 757s, there exists a black stripe about a foot wide running
along the top of each wing from the leading to the trailing edge at
about halfway down the wing from the fuselage.

Can any of you identify those and their function?  And why does TWA seem
to be the only airline that has those whatchamacallits installed on its
jet fleet?
