Why has it been so hard for jets to economically penetrate the small end
(20-50 seats) of the market?  I've heard it said they are efficient when
cruising fast and high, but thirsty and expensive everywhere else...
which is where regionals spend most of their time... but why,
technically, thermodynamically, is this so?  And why are turboprops
better in this regime?
