I haven't seen this reported much, but last week EMBRAER officially
launched the 37-seat EMB-135 derivative of its 50-seat EMB-145 regional
jet. From the press release:

    September 16, 1997 -- Brazilian aircraft manufacturer
      EMBRAER - Empresa Brasileira de Aeron?utica S/A - today
announced the launch of its new regional jet for 37
      passengers - the EMB-135.

The new product embodies the EMBRAER "jet family"
concept. Based on the EMB-145 design, the new aircraft
provides 90% of commonality, such as the
Rolls-Royce/Allison AE3007A-3 engines and main systems,
same cockpit, same wing and tails and same fuselage
(11.6 ft shorter), which translates into low noise,
low fuel consumption, common maintenance and training
      procedures, and low maintenance costs.

The development of this program calls for investments
of US$ 100 Million and a demand of 500 aircraft over
the next ten years. The prototype of the EMB-135 is
schedule to fly in the second semester of 1998, followed
by its certification campaign and first delivery on the
      second half of 1999.

The development of the EMB-135 will be funded by
      Industrial Development Institutions, the participation
of risk sharing suppliers, and EMBRAER's own resources.
