The Comet had another problem that no one has touched upon here. It was
possible to rotate the aircraft before sufficient speed had been reached
to achieve a positive rate of climb.  This resulted in an accident, in
Africa I believe.  The aircraft was rotated early and overran the
runway, and hit immobile objects.  Leading edge devices were added to
the Comet to fix this.
