IMHO, winglets are introduced for drag reduction purposes. You have to note that they were first developed in the 70s fuel crisis. No doubt they have also some effects on the A/C's lateral stability. BTW, does anybody know if it exists a general stablished theory to design both winglets and vortices generators? AFAIK, they are only a trial-and-error matter.
