Well, first there were big fights with the Brit's over the
standard. Then, the FAA screwed around for about 2 lifetimes before
defaulting one of its prime contractors.

Meanwhile the price/ac kept up a rate of climb that would make a
X-15pusher green with envy ;-} --- I heard a cool million
greenbacks per installation.

There are a few ?privately financed? MLS approaches used by one
carrier [A 135 into a ski resort comes to mind but I recall no
specifics...] but that seems to be about it.

GPS has come up so fast that MLS seems to be regarded as DOA;
despite it being an ICAO standard. Sound a little like ISO vs
TCP/IP ;-|
