When the 747-400 came out, controllers started referring to the
older 747s as "classics".  This was at about the same time as
Coca-Cola tried to split into 2 products, "New Coke" and
"Coke Classic".  The point was that the -400 looks different,
so a controller could say "follow the company 747 classic, cleared
for a visual approach" and be more sure that the pilots would
follow the proper aircraft.

I've always wondered why nobody took up the challenge and
referred to the 747SP as a "747 Lite".
