Can't answer all of these questions, but:

It's an ultrasonic periodic pinging.  No RF.  The actual units are
called underwater locator beacons (ULBs), and are about the size of a
small flashlight.  They are bolted onto the front of the FDR/CVR
casing, and are battery powered.
