Note the absence of the 747 in this announcement, which suggests AA are
either [a] still averse to 747s, [b] still considering 747-5/600 vs
A3XX [& vs annything that MD builds] or even [c] never intending to
purchase anything bigger than a 777

[b] is not an option since AA's press release said, "Boeing will
become the exclusive supplier of jet aircraft to American ...
through the year 2018."

You could consider an alternate option [b] AA is waiting for the
747-500X/600X.  However, I think [c] (which, given an all-Boeing
purchasing plan for the next twenty years, implies [a]) is most
likely the right answer.  AA generally prefers greater frequencies
with smaller aircraft (domestic, JFK/ORD-LHR) or niche markets that
can't support a larger aircraft (many of AA's trans-Atlantic routes,
maybe SJC-NRT), so AA buying something as large as the 747 seems
improbable.
