You're probably referring to Tex Johnston's roll of the Dash-80 (707
prototype) in the late fifties.  I didn't see it either, but over
100,000 people did and there are photographs, so I think it's safe to
say it's not just a rumor.  (See the group archives for various past
discussions of this event.)
