I lived in Portland at the time, and it was a United Airlines DC-8 that went
down just short of the airport.  As mentioned earlier in this thread, the plane
had landing gear problems and circled the airport repeatedly.  Finally, they ran
out of fuel and went down about a mile southeast of the airport.

It was a very cold night (about 10 deg F) and there was no fire on the ground.
As I recall, the wings sheared off the plane, but the fuselage was mostly 
intact.  I do not recall any fatalities.
