A supercritical airfoil just minimizes the shock strength present
on a wing. If a wing is designed to be shock free, it is only at one
operating condition and it has been found that this just allows the wing
to be taken to a higher cruise speed, where a shock will then be
present. Transonic wings exhibit best performance when slightly into
drag divergence.
