It is interesting to note that engine hot-section noise control is reaching
a level where the primary contribution to aircraft  noise (on approach, at
least) is the high lift system, i.e. the flaps.  This is true on many of the
new generation of aircraft such as the A330/340, B777, and Boeing's proposed
NLA.
