In general, Boeing jetliners have designations as follows: MMM-SCCV XX where MMM = model 707, 720, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777 S = series 1 for -100, 2 for -200, ... 5 for -500 0 for all 720s null for most (but not all) 727-100s CC = customer code (from list below) V = optional suffix to designation indicating variant B for all non-cargo 747-200s (why?) C for cargo A,B,C for various 707s probably others XX = optional suffix, often unofficial Advanced for later 727-200s and 737-200s (ER) for extended range 757s and 767s (QC) for quick-change 727s and 737s (SCD) for 747s with Side Cargo Doors (definitely unofficial) probably others Note that this is ambiguous -- a 727-22C could be a cargo 727-100 built for United (22) or a standard 727-200 built for Air UK (2C). This is only the case with 727s since the series code for a 727-100 usually is null and isn't a problem because the codes with a digit followed by a letter are fairly recent, long after the 727-100 went out of production. (If anybody can tell me the difference between a 727-23 and a 727-123 I'd like to know. American (23) has several of the latter though most are just -23s. There are a few other examples of 727-100s where the 1 is in the designation, but not many.) The customer codes started at 20. After hitting 99 Boeing went back and used 01 thru 19, then seems to have gone into A0 thru Z9, finally resorting to 0A thru 9F (none of these seem to use letters higher than F). There are holes in part because of codes being assigned for orders that never materialized; Boeing considers these to be proprietary information. The list below was built from various notes of my own, lists in Airliners Monthly News (issues 49 and 54), and a list in JP Airline- Fleets International (1986 edition). The published lists were not always consistent and also missed several codes. I tried to cross- check suspect codes, i.e. several typos were resolved by looking up to see which type the airline actually had or has. There probably still are some errors. A few entries have notes in [square brackets] to clarify odd cases. Also, the IATA two-letter code and ICAO three- letter code is listed for each airline, where available and applicable.
